The state-of-the-art 45 cubicle unit is one of the largest and certainly has the most complex case mix in the country. The Alfred ICU offers observerships, honorary appointments and sabbaticals in General Intensive Care and also with a specific focus on ECMO. These positions are only available to intensive care consultants and trainees. As we receive a significant number of interested applicants, we have developed the following pathway for interested applicants. Our dynamic ICU teams also provide care and support outside the ICU: Medical Emergency Team (MET) for all inpatients at the Alfred.

Our doctors work across a range of services and clinics at our hospitals and community locations. The Alfred Department of Intensive Care is accredited for 2 core years of training as stipulated by the College of Intensive Care Medicine. There is an extensive consultant led education program including dedicated protected weekly teaching sessions for junior and senior registrars aimed at developing both technical and non-technical skills.
