i. The CEFR illustrative descriptors have been developed, validated and calibrated irrespective of specified age groups, whereas descriptors of language competence for young learners represent selective adaptations of the existing CEFR illustrative descriptors and scales, and only where relevant to a given age group and context. Since the CEFR descriptors are part of a ‘flexible, open, dynamic, and non-dogmatic’ document (Trim 2012: 29), there is room for improvement or fine-tuning. Making the most of the flexibility in the CEFR allows users to adapt it to their reality, without losing track of the CEFR.

Early Language Learning and Teaching: Pre-A1-A2

There are six levels, ranging from A1 to C2. For each of these you can download below a description of each level and the learning outcomes for each level. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment, abbreviated as CEFR, is a framework used to describe achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe and, increasingly, in other countries. CEFR Common European Framework of Reference, 2001: illustrative descriptors ALTE 2002 ALTE Can Do Project, November 2002 (Booklet) DIALANG: DIALANG in CEFR Appendix C CCWS draft Cambridge Common Writing Scale project - reformulated by BN in CEFR style.Source: Hawkey, R. and Barker, F. (2004): Developing a & Cavalli 2015) and an update of the CEFR’s illustrative descriptors, including covering mediation. As no validated descriptors for mediation existed, documentary research for relevant literature as well as pedagogic and assessment tools was undertaken to define the constructs for categories of descriptors. The CEFR organises language proficiency in six levels, A1 to C2, which can be regrouped into three broad levels: Basic User, Independent User and Proficient User, and that can be further subdivided according to the needs of the local context. The levels are defined through ‘can-do’ descriptors.
